Accepting the Position
When accepting a job, keep in mind what is important to you and how to protect yourself. A lot of people lose site of what they want in a job, and are fueled by emotions. Step back and take an outsider’s look at the big picture.
Once you are offered the position, don’t accept it right away. It’s perfectly normal to ask for a day to work out the details. Make sure this is a great fit, it is your career.
Use this twenty-four hour period to talk to a ton of people (probably not people at your current company) but friends and family. When you talk to people, they’ll ask you questions about the job, which you should know the answer to. If you don’t, make a list of everything you’re not 100% clear on.
Go online and research anything you can about the company. Research the CEO, research the person who interviewed you and dig up any dirt. Check the better business bureau, etc. If there’s anything bad about them, now’s the time to find it.
Come up with any concerns or questions you have. Give it some real serious thought and make sure it’s an educated move and not an emotional one.
Call the employer back the next day as promised, make sure you get all of your questions answered. Find out if you can get the offer in writing. Most decent companies should have no problem writing you up an offer.
Once you get the offer in writing, read it carefully. Jot down any questions or issues you may have. You could even have an attorney look at it if you really want to be safe. But just make sure there’s nothing fishy.
If you are careful and do your homework, you should be able to spot the red flags. Like I said, be educated…not emotional when accepting the position.
