Should You Accept a Counter Offer?
So you decided that you are going to leave your current employer. You gave your notice and you get called into your manager’s office. They sit you down and tell you that they want you to stay and are willing to offer you more money or better benefits. What do you do now?
Always listen to what they are saying. Let them lay it all out on the line. Then you advise them that you will think about it and get back to them. Walk out thanking them for the offer and give a set time or date that you will answer.
It doesn’t matter how long it will be because your answer should always be “NO.” Why you may ask? You are leaving this employer for a reason. Think about it. You may have asked for more money and they told you “sorry we don’t have the funds” or “we don’t feel that you deserve more at this point.”
Now think about it. Why is it that your employer couldn’t find the funds while you were there, but now all of a sudden they have the funds to pay you what you want?
Did they respect and show you that you were worth keeping while you were there? Do you really think they will show you respect and worth if you stay? Doubt it! Maybe it’s the benefits that you want, the perks. Will you get them now?
You have to look at a job as a relationship if they didn’t appreciate you while you were there, what makes you think they will appreciate you when you decide to leave.
Another sad scenario is they want you to stay long enough for them to hire your replacement. This does happen. Sadly but it does. Employers may keep you around long enough to have someone get trained or hired to take over your job. Then your get fired and have no job to go to.
Just remember that you almost never want to stay at a position once you have advised them that you are leaving.

But what if the only reason you want to leave your present company is money. For example, I work in an IT company in the Philippines and I am well paid by local standards. Then I received a job offer in Singapore, which will pay me more than double what get now. But I enjoy working with my current employer, and I believe the company will make a counter commensurate (but not equal) to what I will be receiving in Singapore. Should I accept this counter offer? To be honest, if not for the money, I wouldn’t consider leaving the Philippines for Singapore.

I totally agree. You got right to the point with “matter of facts”. If my company truly valued me as an employee then they would’ve respected my need for more. It’s really funny how we get fed up with not being valued in any kind of relationship then when we’re strong enough and capable of leaving for something better they finally see the light. It’s better to go/stay with a company who knows a good thing when they see it and it shouldn’t be a battle to ever get what we really want and deserve.
