Remembering someones name is very important when applying for a job. You should by all means know the name of the person you are having an interview with. This is the name you should ask for when you reach the front desk.
Do not ask for the HR manager. There are several reasons for why you should never do this. The most obvious one is you may get the wrong person. There is nothing more embarrassing then going back to someones office and starting the interview with someone who thinks your someone else and realizing your not. This not only causes them to waste their time, it doesn’t look very good on you. There may be more than one person in Human Resources and more than one person having an interview at the same time that you are.
Other peoples names to remember are people you have talked to along the way. Such as a manager or another employee who told you about the job. You should know their first and last name. There may be more than one employee with that same name.
References are also important to remember. Know their name and title. They may know this person and engage in some personal conversation with you about them. Also, have them handy when you go in for the interview in case they ask you to write them down. Have your references full name, address and phone number.
It is best to keep a log of anyone you talk to at a potential employer. This will help you remember who and when you spoke to them. This is also good to have for when you send out your thank you notes.
Just remember that knowing a name can make the difference between being embarrassed and looking well informed. You make the choice, which would you prefer?
